the alarm system that never shuts off, the hypervigilance that turns a busy grocery store into a crowded kill zone, and the intrusive thoughts that feel like unauthorized mission briefings at 3 AM are all symptoms of PTSD.

I’ve done the work. I’ve sat on the couches, taken the pills, and processed the trauma. But sometimes, healing requires less talk and more deeply felt experience—a grounding force so powerful it can yank your mind out of the past and anchor it firmly in the present.

That grounding force, for me, was found not in a clinical setting, but on the back of a tough, steady mare named Esperanza, traversing the humid, breathtaking trails of Puerto Rico.

If you can break your routine, whether in Puerto Rico or a stable ten miles away, do it. Discover your Esperanza. Find that steady rhythm that frees your mind from the past and puts it into the vibrant, challenging, and beautiful present.

Because sometimes, fellow veterans, the path to healing isn’t paved; it’s a muddy, challenging trail, and the best way to navigate it is astride a creature who reminds you how to be grounded, powerful, and utterly, wonderfully present. Stand easy, and keep exploring.
