Finding Healing in the Tropics: Why Puerto Rico Became My Sanctuary (And Why Our Veterans Need Help)

Living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a battle that doesn’t have a definitive “end date.” There is no magic pill or singular cure that makes the memories vanish or the hypervigilance fade. For a long time, I felt like a prisoner in my environment, haunted by the associations of my past. I learned through experience that sometimes, to heal, you have to physically change your surroundings.

I made the difficult decision to leave home and start over, and I found my refuge in Puerto Rico.

The Healing Power of the Island

Moving to Puerto Rico wasn’t just a change of scenery; it was a shift in spirit. There is something profoundly healing about the rhythm of life here. Only the warmth of the people matches the warmth of the sun.

In the states, I often felt like a ghost, struggling to fit into a fast-paced, high-pressure society that didn’t understand the invisible weight I carried. Here, the culture prioritizes human connection. Whether it’s a neighbor stopping to chat or the vibrant energy of a local festival, the emphasis on community and being present has done more for my nervous system than any clinical setting ever could. The beauty of the island is a constant reminder that life is still worth living, and the gentle, welcoming nature of the Boricua people has provided me with a sense of belonging I haven’t felt in years.

The Hidden Crisis: Veterans on the Streets

However, my journey here has also revealed a heartbreaking reality. While I found peace, I have witnessed firsthand the staggering number of homeless veterans living on the streets of Puerto Rico.

It is an unacceptable tragedy. These are men and women who served with honor, yet they have been left to face the elements, hunger, and the isolating grip of trauma in the shadows of paradise. Seeing a brother or sister-in-arms sleeping on a sidewalk in San Juan—or abandoned in rural areas—makes me feel heartbroken every single day.

They are resilient, they are proud, and they are struggling. Many are dealing with the exact same PTSD symptoms I face, but without the support system, the resources, or the stability that I was lucky enough to secure.

I Need Your Help

I am writing this not just to share my own story but to raise awareness. We are failing those who gave everything for us. I have been spending my time interacting with these veterans, listening to their stories, and trying to connect their isolation with the resources they need.

But I cannot do this alone.

How you can help:

  1. Raise Awareness: Many people have no idea that this crisis exists in the heart of the Caribbean. Share this post. Talk about it. Make the invisible visible.
  2. Support Local Organizations: There are amazing local groups in Puerto Rico working to provide food, shelter, and medical care to homeless veterans. If you are looking for a way to contribute, I can help point you toward organizations that are making a tangible difference.
  3. Advocate for Policy Change: We need better VA services and state-level support for veterans living in the territories. We need to demand that the federal government treat the veterans in Puerto Rico with the same urgency as those on the mainland.

Healing is possible, but it shouldn’t be a privilege. It should be a standard of care for every person who puts on a uniform.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for helping me advocate for these warriors. Together, we can provide them with the dignity they earned and the peace they deserve.

If you’d like to learn more about the specific situation here or find out how you can contribute to the relief efforts I’m involved with, please reach out in the comments or send a message. Let’s get to work.
