Finding Healing in the Tropics: Why Puerto Rico is My Sanctuary for Recovery

There is a specific kind of quiet that settles over you when the trade winds hit the palm trees in Puerto Rico. It isn’t an empty silence; it’s a living, breathing hum of life that seems to wash away the static of the mainland.

In a few days, I’ll be heading back to the island. For me, this isn’t just a vacation. It’s a pilgrimage—a necessary retreat that helps me reconnect with a version of myself that sometimes becomes lost in the noise of daily life back home.

As a veteran, I’ve spent years navigating the landscape of PTSD. We all know the routine: the hyper-vigilance, the persistent weight of memories, and the feeling that we are constantly running on a battery that never fully charges. But for reasons I’m still unpacking, Puerto Rico acts as a sanctuary for my spirit.

The Medicine of the Island

There is something transformative about the Isla del Encanto. It’s the contrast of the rugged El Yunque rainforest against the turquoise expanse of the Caribbean. It’s the way the sun warms your skin in a way that feels restorative rather than exhausting.

More than the scenery, though, it’s the people. The culture of Puerto Rico is steeped in a profound, unpretentious kindness. Whether it’s a stranger offering a smile as you walk through Old San Juan or the genuine warmth of the locals in the smaller pueblos, I have found that the people of Puerto Rico don’t ask for anything from you. They don’t look at your past or your labels. They look at you, and they share. That lack of judgment is, for many of us, the first step toward lowering our guard.

A Call to Connect

This trip, however, carries a different intention. I’m not just going to recharge; I’m hoping to find others who might be on a similar path.

If you are a fellow veteran who has found yourself struggling with the invisible wounds of service, I want you to know you aren’t alone. I know how isolating that struggle can be, and I know that sometimes the best medicine is a conversation with someone who doesn’t need you to explain what “it” feels like.

I’m looking to connect with brothers and sisters in arms who either live on the island or are visiting and who understand the challenges that come with healing. Whether it’s sharing a strong cup of local coffee, sitting by the ocean, or discussing the ways we navigate our recoveries, I’m opening up space for those connections.

Why We Need Each Other

We often think that healing is something we have to do alone, tucked away in our private corners of the world. But trauma thrives in isolation. By sharing our stories—even just the fragments of them—we take away their power.

Puerto Rico has given me a safe harbor. If you’re a veteran currently feeling the weight of PTSD, and you’re in or heading toward the island, I’d love to cross paths. Let’s trade stories, let’s breathe in the sea air, and let’s remind each other that while our service ended, our ability to discover peace is just beginning.

To my fellow veterans: You’ve carried enough. You don’t have to carry it all while you’re here. The island is ready to help you set it down for a while.
